Suede leather, nubuck and split leather

How to care for suede leather?

Care steps

Step 1: Remove dust
Brush regularly with a suede brush to remove dust and surface particles.

Step 2: Clean
Use a suede eraser on stained or marked areas. For a more thorough clean, use a crepe brush to lift the material.

Step 3: Protect
Apply a waterproofing treatment before the first uses, then reapply regularly. This helps limit the effects of water and stains on the leather.

Step 4: Refresh
When the material loses some of its intensity, apply a revitalizer like Sublim daim to restore depth to the color.

Step 5: Maintain the shape
Use shoe trees after each wear to help preserve the shoe’s structure.

Suede leather: texture and how it evolves over time

How does this type of leather evolve?

Over time, these leathers can change slightly, particularly in color and feel. Friction can create darker or smoother areas, especially on the most frequently used parts.

The suede and split leather generally mark more easily, while the nubuck, being denser and more even, keeps a more uniform appearance.

These changes are normal and are part of leather’s life.

Suede sensitivity and everyday use

Suede, or suede leather, is a more sensitive material than smooth leather. It reacts in particular to moisture and oils/fats, which can leave visible marks.

When it comes into contact with water, the material may temporarily darken. Some stains, especially greasy ones, can be more difficult to remove.

Despite this, it still suits everyday city wear as long as it is protected and maintained regularly, and avoiding overly damp conditions.

Mistakes to avoid with suede leather (nubuck, split leather)

• Wear these leathers under heavy or prolonged rain
• Apply polish, cream, or oil for smooth leather
• Clean with too much water, risking ring marks (auréoles)
• Rub too vigorously, which can damage the material
• Let it dry near a direct heat source (radiator, sun)
